The three items I would choose to take with me are:
- photo album: filled with family pictures
- candle sticks: silver family Shabbat candle sticks
- heart locket: a gold heart locket
I would tell people that each of these items is important to me because they all represents my family and my family culture. The photo album is filled with family pictures. The Shabbat candle sticks were my great-great-great grandmothers and now they belong to me. The heart locket was my great grandmothers and now it's mine.
If I was told that I could only keep one of the items and had to give up the other two I would be very upset and have a really hard time with that. I don't think I would be able to give up any of these items. These are the only things that I have from my family and I will never be able to part with them.
After doing this exercise I have learned that I am very proud of my family and my family culture. I would do anything to keep the traditions and I will always make sure that my children will grow up with the same traditions and culture that I did. A persons family culture is very important and all cultures should be celebrated and shared with others.

ReplyDeleteI also had a hard time thinking about parting with any of the items I chose. They represent family traditions and history that is heart wrenching to think about giving up for anything. I also believe traditions are very important to pass on to our children. Do you think all traditions are culture based? I know that my husband and I have developed some of our traditions since we have been married that are simply because we want to continue them.
When I looked at this assignment it made me feel like I don't know much about myself or my family. I do not feel cultured, I feel like we do things but there has been nothing passed down from anyone in my family. This assignment has me thinking that I wish there was some sought of tradition or items of sentimental value passed down to my generation but there isn't I come from a family that is just trying to get by; hopefully when I have children I'll be able to do things differently with them.
